<image:title>*About*</image:title>
<image:caption>I’m Richard Cowdry, a cartoonist from England now living in Berlin. This is an advert I made recently for an issue of Kuti magazine, a comics magazine from Finland.</image:caption>

<image:title>*About*</image:title>
<image:caption>This is my first comic from 2004. Kartoon Cuts. It was a collection of all the short strips I’d done up to that point. A friend saw it recently in a library in Seattle. I don’t know how it ended up there.</image:caption>

<image:title>*About*</image:title>
<image:caption>After Kartoon Cuts I did 3 issues of The Bedsit Journal. It was another anthology, this time with guest artists who fitted the vibe. It was mainly autobiographical and humour comics.</image:caption>

<image:title>*About*</image:title>
<image:caption>Then I organised and edited 6 issues of a comics newspaper called The Comix Reader. There were hardly any comics publishers in the UK in those days so this was a way of getting our work out. Everyone paid towards the printing and we shared out the comics, with everyone getting a few hundred copies to distribute as they liked.</image:caption>

<image:caption>About a year after I gave the above talk (in June 2023) my paleontology graphic novel was picked up by Avant Verlag. It came out in a German edition in November 2025. The two stories that I drew for the BLAB! anthology are long completed. The pages to the left (or above if you’re on a phone) are for Blab! issue 3. Two pages from my paleontology graphic novel ended up in the witchcraft-themed issue of KUTI, the comics magazine from Finland. I’ve started doing a weekly science fiction story which is a collaboration with Peter Lally. I’m also writing a new period story set around 1700. I’m super-excited about both these projects. From next month I’ll be out and about promoting my paleontology book. So maybe see you around if you’re in Germany.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Comix Reader - Comix Reader Issue One, 2010. Cover by Richard Cowdry.</image:title>
<image:caption>The Secret History Of…… The Comix Reader Come join me as I travel back in time.... back, back to the dawn of the 21st century. I was fresh out of college and wanted to be a cartoonist. I had some encouragement, winning a minor award at a Swiss comics festival. They invited me over in 2002 and I had my first insight into the huge Swiss/French/Belgian comic scene. I was stunned... comic artists were treated like stars! The level of funding involved was also an eye opener. Back in Britain there was very little happening. There were occasional comics fairs, but no comics publishers to send my work to. I began distributing photocopied zines and settled into a life of unemployment.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Comix Reader - Me with The Bedsit Journal at a comics fair in London (Comiket I think) around 2009.</image:title>
<image:caption>Fast forward a few years and things had changed. There were still no publishers but there was a lot of small press activity. Oli Smith's London Underground Comics were doing weekly stalls in Camden Market, in Brighton there was Sean Duffield's Paper Tiger Comics collective, Oxford and Bristol had their own scenes. Paul Gravett was organising regular fairs and exhibitions. I was doing an anthology comic called The Bedsit Journal. It was a collaboration with my friend Peter Lally and was an honest expression of our lives spent languishing in cheap rented accommodation while trying to figure out how to assimilate into regular society. It featured our own work plus other people who fitted the dark humourous vibe.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The comic was something of a cult favourite.... but it didn't really fit in with the small press scene of the time. It was kind of its own scene. This was the problem really: it was cool there was all this DIY indie comics stuff going on, but apart from a handful of artists like Mardou, Lord Hurk, Bird, or Hannah Glickstein, I couldn't find many comics I could relate to. Most small press activity was geared towards fantasy and heroics. Not that I’m dismissing those genres… I'm as big a nerd as anyone, but at that time I was looking for funny, personal, self-revealing types of work, and this stuff was scarce.</image:caption>

<image:caption>As it happened things were about to change again : a printmaker/cartoonist/zinester then known as Jimi Gherkin appeared and began organising comic fairs in a London pub. Jimi was so friendly, enthusiastic and easy to deal with that comic artists were drawn to his events.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Comix Reader - Poster for The Alternative Press Fair by Lord Hurk, 2010.</image:title>
<image:caption>Helped by Peter Lally, Gareth Brookes and Saban Kazim, he began the Alternative Press Fair, which took place in a church social club in North London. Between Jimi's approachability and openness, and I guess because of the name of the fair, local alternative and underground cartoonists came out the woodwork : Tobias Tak, Kevin Ward, Kat Kon, Tanya Meditzky, Ellen Lindner, Mike Medaglia, Alex Potts, Julia Homersham, Bernadette Bently, Paul Ashley Brown, Saban “Shabs” Kazim, Dickon Harris, Sally Shiny Stars, Sina Evil, Dave Ziggy Greene, Kate McMorrine, Maartje Schalkx, etc, - most of whom I'd never met before. As the first Alternative Press Fair wound down everyone gathered in the bar, and I found myself among a crowd of artists, ALL of whom were doing work I could appreciate and relate to. What a great feeling!! For me this was the start of a new scene.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Comix Reader - Poster for The Comix Reader Mega Launch by Ellen Lindner, 2011.</image:title>
<image:caption>The problem (if it was a problem), was that there were still no publishers for our kind of comics. We were all self-publishing and trading with each other. Few of us had any talent for selling, and distributing even a hundred copies of a comic could be tough work for an introvert. But what if we all did something together? I'd heard about a newspaper printer who was open to taking side jobs, and for a few hundred pounds it was possible to get a few thousand newspapers printed. This was interesting but not very relevant to me. Now though I was surrounded by a group of artists who needed and deserved an audience. So what if everyone had a page each, and we got as many copies printed as we could afford? We all chip in towards the costs, everyone takes a share of the print run and sells or distributes what they can of it? People would at least see our work.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Comix Reader - Ellen Lindner and Julia Homersham selling The Comix Reader at Green Man Festival, 2013(?). Gareth Brookes is probably hiding in the tent.</image:title>
<image:caption>I imagined us selling it on the street like urchin newsboys, "Gitcher Comix Reader!!!" And by keeping the price as low as possible - like £1 - people would have little to lose by trying it out. We could expand the audience for comics! I imagined it like a late 19th century comic newspaper, back in the days before comics were thought of as kids stuff, being read by regular folk with half an hour to kill on the bus, in the pub, wherever. And it all would’ve stayed in my imagination if the Alternative Press crowd weren't up for it, but as it turned out nearly everyone I asked was interested.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Comix Reader - Cover for The Comix Reader Issue 4 by the late Tobias Tak, 2012.</image:title>
<image:caption>If you're going to print several thousand newspapers they are going to arrive in bundles of 100 copies, wrapped in plastic, fixed to a pallette. Where do you store 600kg of comics? We all lived in small rented flats and bedsits. My partner made it clear they weren't coming our way. Thankfully Lord Hurk, at great inconvenience to himself, offered to sneak the delivery into his work place in Tooks Court, London. So a printing date was set for 18th November 2010: 9000 copies. A few cartoonists waited around Tooks Court for the delivery. When the van arrived it couldn't fit down the alley, so the driver had to leave the pallet on the street corner. We ripped open the package and carried 90 bundles of comics down the road to safety (Hurk's storeroom). Thankfully : no rain.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Comix Reader - Elliot Baggott relaxing with The Comix Reader Issue 5, 2013. Cover by Alex Potts.</image:title>
<image:caption>We had a launch party for Comix Reader issue 1. I wasn't sure how many people would make it (imagining myself broken and humiliated in an empty room) but it was far busier than I could have imagined. There were guests before I'd even arrived, and by 7.30 we'd filled the room, and were spilling out into the main bar. After that we began meeting monthly at The Crown in New Oxford Street. Always a great crowd of cool & friendly comics (and non comics) people turned up. Wonderful! It was still a new thing for me to know a bunch of people with the same interests. Looking back it was a thrilling time which I probably didn't appreciate enough. I miss those people sooo much! We made 4 issues over the next two years, with me moving to Berlin shortly before issue 4 came out. Issues 5 and 6 took a lot longer to put together.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Comix Reader - Comix Reader Issue 6, 2015. Cover by Richard Cowdry.</image:title>
<image:caption>Comix Reader distribution was ad hoc to say the least. This was cool in a way as artists could do whatever they wanted with their share of the comics (the print run peaked at 11,000, so there were plenty to go round). The paper was available at music festivals, comic shops, zine fairs, comedy gigs, pubs, etc. But to continue long term I think we would've needed more conventional, predictable distribution. Some shops, like Gosh!, in London, were super-supportive and kept it permanently on display, while others didn’t want to stock it because it was too cheap.</image:caption>

<image:caption>By the last issues it was becoming embarrassing to ask the artists to pay towards the print and delivery costs. We needed a different model to finance it but we only ever ran one advert, which was a sponsored page by Knockabout Comics. Tony Bennet, Knockabout’s publisher, was a big supporter of the Reader. The only other money we got was from Wildseed Studios, an animation studio that was working with Ralph Kidson. We didn’t get any support from the British Arts Council. If we’d got some money, what else could we have done? Peter Lally said that with 20 grand we could have revolutionised British comics. We’d certainly have done something worthwhile.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Writing this now, I just remembered we were also represented by Diamond Distribution. This didn’t work for us... we would have needed our own alternative distribution (man). Storage was an issue too. When Hurk was no longer able to store the comics they all went to Mike Medaglia’s garage. When Mike left London, thousands of copies were given away, and the remainder went to Julia Homersham’s place. When I moved to Albania in 2015 I felt too removed from the comic scene and figured it was time to stop. Maybe if I'd stayed in London we'd have worked out the financial & distribution side of things. As such I feel like the experiment wasn't completed. I would have liked Julia Homersham to draw the cover for Issue 7. The sad thing for me is that some wonderful cartoonists from the Comix Reader no longer make comics. I wish our society was more encouraging and supportive and placed more value on this kind of art and these kinds of comics.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - 13 August 2025</image:title>
<image:caption>From Avant Verlag on Instagram : In our series about the authors and artists featured in the 2025 fall program, today we introduce British illustrator Richard Cowdry and his first long-form comic project, “The Secret of the Bones.” Richard Cowdry studied illustration in Brighton and has been publishing comics in magazines such as Vice, Kuti, Stripburger, and Oxford American since the 2000s. With The Comix Reader, he founded an important platform for London's alternative comic scene. He has been living in Berlin since 2012, where he won the ComicInvasionBerlin Award in 2020. “The Secret of the Bones” is his first graphic novel – and is dedicated to his great passion: science and history comics. His book tells an exciting and entertaining story about how paleontology developed as a science in the 18th and 19th centuries. At that time, dinosaur fossils were still considered dragon bones – until researchers such as Joseph Anning, Gideon Mantell, William Conybeare, and the groundbreaking Mary Anning put the pieces of the puzzle together. With fine humour, Cowdry shows how speculation, science, and social change are intertwined. “The Secret of the Bones” will be published in November 2025.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Sorry for the lack of updates. I moved house and it's taking a while to get back into my normal rhythms of doing things. I'm busy colouring my dinosaur book, which I have to finish next year. It's crazy how long it takes! I'm sure there are faster ways of doing it, perhaps digitally on an iPad, with a limited colour pallet. But I don't have either. However it's very satisfying when the colour takes the page to a new level.</image:caption>

I'm literally drawing the first page right now. Meanwhile did you see my contribution to this year's Bilderberg Konferenz publication? Perhaps you picked it up at their recent exhibition in the Neurotitan Gallery in Berlin? I'm about to send in my story for Blab issue 3. This leaves me open to start another project, which is to write a book for Moom Comics. More on this soon! Bye for now, and best wishes.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A quick update in case anyone's looking. I'm just back in Germany from the UK where I had a chance to visit the Jurassic Coast, which was Mary Anning's old stomping ground in the early to mid-1800s. It was great to feel the mud, sand and rocks under my feet. Feel the wind and sun on my face, get my hands dirty while looking (vainly) for fossils, and generally getting a sense of the place. I especially wanted to see the colours of the rocks, sea, sky and cliffs, because I have a LOT of colouring to do over the next few months.... because.... ***My book will be published next year by Avant Verlag in Germany.*** I can tell you more about it later. avant-verlag.de</image:caption>

<image:caption>Update I haven't had much to say recently... but it's all good. I'm very busy, but everything I'm doing is in progress. I have my BLAB! issue 3 story that I'm still colouring. BLAB! issue 2 is in the can, and hopefully something about that will be announced soon. I'm also hoping I'll have something to announce about my Before Dinosaurs project, but it's not certain yet.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I'm currently writing and thumbnailing a science fiction serial. It's unlike anything I've done before. It's a collaboration with Peter Lally and I can't wait to start showing it. I'm just now finishing a story for the Bilderburger Konference (Berlin's underground comix group). It's autobiographical, but only in an emotional & psychological sense. I've also just agreed to do a new non-fiction book. I'm really super-excited by it. I'm not going to say anything about yet because it's such a good idea.... and I don't want anyone else to do it first. I'll be back in touch soon. Bye for now.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - 22 December 2023</image:title>
<image:caption>End of 2023 Not such a bad year. Definitely better than 2020 - 2022, which were brutal. I'm grateful to the friends I have in Berlin (and beyond) - they know who they are - and to the people who like my comics. I feel like I'm making progress, even if it’s glacially slow. It was good to get back into the Berlin comic scene which is a supportive place, at least at the grassroots, street level. Currently I'm trying to decide what to focus on next. I'll probably do some short projects and then see which I feel most inspired to continue. Meanwhile I'll have a story in Blab issue 2. That book should be coming out in spring 2024 from Dark Horse. Right now I'm finishing the art for Blab issue 3. I think this story is the best comic I've done. I'm thinking of doing a weekly diary comic in 2024. Just to help me loosen up and be more spontaneous and as a kind of therapeutic exercise. Like a page a week or something. Just posting it on instagram. We'll see. I'm still adding new material to the fossil book, and colouring it when I have time. This is how a finished page looks like. There were some really great, inspiring books in 2023, plus good podcasts, youtube channels, zines. Despite the wars, mass murders and recessions, the comic scene survives and is even in good shape - at least creatively. See you in 2024!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Reynardine Last Saturday I shared a table at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele for the Graphic Novel Day, which was part of the Internationales Literaturfestival Berlin. I wanted to have something new on my table so I made a mini comic especially for the festival. The comic is an adaption of a folk ballad that dates back at least to the 1700s. Reynardine is a little 28 page comic (A7 size). If you want a copy you can PayPal me 5€, $5, or £5 and I’ll send you one.</image:caption>

The theme of this issue (68) is witchcraft, magic, paganism, and the occult. There are some lovely pages in it. My favourites have a kind of meditative, poetic quality.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Berliner Fenster Comics A few years back, some time before 2015, when I first lived in Berlin, I saw the comics of Marc Seestaedt on the Berlin U-bahn. They were shown as a slideshow, instagram-style, on the double television screens that you see in each carriage of the U-bahn. One screen displays information about your route, while the other, where the comics appeared, features mainly news stories and advertising. I thought this was great and wondered how he was able to organise something like this. Marc must be good at organising things: he is the founder of Berlin's annual comics festival ComicsInvasionBerlin... some people are able to do this stuff. I have great memories of tabling at the early ComicsInvasion's. They were the most fun I ever had at a comics festival. Plus the artists and guests in attendance seemed to genuinely appreciate my Comix Reader anthology, which made me feel really good about being involved in comics. When I moved back to Berlin in 2019 ComicsInvasion had grown from a DIY, punky, alternative thing into a bigger, more established festival. The festival was also running "seasons" of Berliner Fenster comics to be shown on all the U-Bahn screens. Any comics person in Berlin could submit strips. I drew one and sent it. Hooray! But then ... Corona.... I'm not sure if that season ever happened but there was a new call for strips in 2020. This season did happen. I waited a long time for my strip to be shown and the day it was finally scheduled I was heading out of town. But I had like a 10 minute journey on the U-bahn to get to the train station. Perhaps I could still see my strip...??? I didn't see it... although I THINK I might have caught the last panel of the strip for a split second just as I got on the U6. NB the photo I posted here is fake, I just pasted my art over the screens. Anyway, I just submitted a strip for a NEW season of Berliner Fenster comics. So maybe I still have a chance to see my comic on that screen. Then I will really feel like a Berlin Comic Artist.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Save Berlin’s Renate Comics Library! Rette Renate! • All Berlin Comic professionals, sign our letter to the Berlin Minister of Culture! As most of you will know by now, Renate, our beloved comic library and the cornerstone of the comic community in Berlin is in danger of closing down in the next two months. My flatmate and esteemed colleague Sebastian Strombach and I have decided to take action and mobilise the whole comic community to save Renate! To this effect, we have written a letter that we will give to the Minister for culture and Europe in Berlin, Dr Klaus Lederer, asking for financial help to protect Renate. This letter we want all you, comic artists, publishers, critics, comic store owners and employees, all the professionals of our Berlin Comic Community to sign it, as many of you already have. Because we are such a small community, with an online petition we would only get a few thousands signatures at best which isn't so impressive in comparison to the hundreds of thousands some other online petitions can easily get. This is why we have made an actual letter for you to sign to show how committed we all are to defending our community! Because of the actual sanitary restrictions we have to do this one at a time so please, if you are a professional and want to sign the letter, contact me (insta or facebook) or Sebastian Strombach (Facebook) to see how we can arrange to meet (you come to us of we to you). Let's show them what we can do! If you are leaving outside of Berlin, do not feel like meeting face to face with people at this time or are not a comic professional but still want to show you support, we also have an online petition on Change.org here: https://www.change.org/retterenate There you can also read the text from the letter in both English and German. <image:caption>Pandemic Arts A couple of months ago I applied to be part of a group exhibition organised by Pandemic Healing Arts. I was very happy to be accepted because I was feeling gloomy after a couple of months of Corona lockdown. I needed something creative to focus on. For the exhibition I drew two comics about the frustration of working from home while homeschooling and caring for a reluctant 8 year old son. The photo above is from last night‘s opening of the Exhibition at WIDERKUNST III, Holzmarkt25, Berlin. It was a good varied show and worth a look.</image:caption>
